Rahul Dravid has resigned as India captain with immediate effect. In a letter written to the Indian board, he has asked to be relieved of the captaincy before Australia's forthcoming tour of India, beginning later this month.
"I enjoyed the captaincy, I loved it, but it can get tough after a while and some of the enjoyment can go away," Dravid told BBC. "So I thought it was the right time to step aside.''
The board president, Sharad Pawar, said Dravid told him of his wish to step down, with immediate effect, when they met on Thursday. "He said, 'The selectors have placed faith in me to lead continuously for two years and I'm grateful for that'", Pawar said. "He said he would like to concentrate on his batting and the opportunity should be given to a new person to lead the side."
"He has discussed the issue with me twice. I think we need to respect his decision," Pawar said.
Dravid had opted out of the ICC World Twenty20 currently on in South Africa and the captaincy of that team was handed to Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Shah told Cricinfo the board would meet within the next two days to appoint the next captain. "We will take a decision very soon." Australia arrive in India on September 25 and the first of seven ODIs is in Bangalore four days later.
Dilip Vengsarkar, the chairman of selectors, said a decision would be taken on September 18, when the team for the Australia ODIs is to be picked.
Vengsarkar, who was in New Delhi watching the match between India A and South Africa A, appeared unaware of the news until told about it by journalists. Asked for his reaction, Vengsarkar said: "I can't even be shocked because [officially] I haven't heard anything."
Dravid, 33, has captained India in 20 Tests and 62 ODIs since taking over the captaincy from Sourav Ganguly two years ago, following India's tour of Zimbabwe.
Under his captaincy India won eight Tests, including series wins in West Indies, Bangladesh and England. However, his ODI record was patchy; he began on a winning streak, where India set a record for 16 consecutive successful chases. More recently, though, the team had a first-round exit from the World Cup in the Caribbean and lost the NatWest series to England 4-3.
As captain, he averaged 51 in Tests and 44 in ODIs but his Test form had dipped of late; he averaged 25 against England recently and 21 on the South Africa tour last year.
His decision comes as India is preparing for a busy season including a home series against Pakistan and a full tour of Australia.

The Twenty20 World Cup is just what India need to refresh themselves after their recent tour of England, according to new captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
"I don't think fatigue will have any impact on the team. The England tour was very tiring and exhausting but this is a World Cup and that brings excitement, freshness and confidence to the team," Dhoni told reporters on Monday.
Dhoni said he would not feel under extra pressure when he leads India for the first time in the inaugural 20-over world championship, which starts on Tuesday.
Regular captain Rahul Dravid and former skippers Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar are all being rested.
"I never even dreamed of playing for my country, so to captain India is a massive bonus. But I am not under any pressure because it is the team that must implement my decisions," Dhoni said.
"I only make the decisions and whether they are successful or not depends on the response of the whole playing eleven. I know it is a very big challenge to be captain but success is not just about the captain. Good captains are made by good teams."
India completed a gruelling four-month tour of England at the weekend, losing the last of seven one-day internationals to lose the series 4-3.
They flew straight to South Africa but Dhoni said he did not believe fatigue would be a problem in the two-week tournament.
India welcome several fresh players, having recalled experienced spinner Harbhajan Singh, hard-hitting all-rounders Joginder Sharma and Irfan Pathan and swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag. Irfan's older brother Yusuf, a spin bowling all-rounder, has also earned a first call-up.
"We will have quite a few fresh players just for this tournament," Dhoni said.
Harbhajan and Irfan are experienced bowlers who are used to bowling in the slog overs or when there are field restrictions. The other guys have been in the Under 19s together and have been to a bunch of national camps, so gelling will not be a big matter."
India face Scotland in Durban in their first match on Thursday night.

Rajasthani Turbans are known for their beauty and elegance, they are an essential part of traditional outfit and is still worn in small towns and villages of Rajasthan.
The Turban, variously called pagari, pencha, sela , or safa, depending on style, an angrakhi or achakan as upper garment, and dhoti or pyjamas as the lower garment make up the male outfit.
Turban Styles:
It has been estimated that there are approximately one thousand different styles and types of turbans in Rajasthan, various styles of turbans denote region and caste. These variations are by different names such as pagari and safa. A pagari is usually 82 feet long and 8 inches wide. A safa is shorter and broader. The common man wears turbans of one color, while the elite wear designs and colors according to the occasion.
Tying the Turban
Achieving the different styles with just a length of material requires great skill.
Specialists in this art, called pagribands, were employed by the royal courts, but Rajasthanis generally take pride in practicing and perfecting the art of turban-tying themselves.
A safa is much more than just an item of headgear to protect the wearer from the sun's heat.
By its shape, color and size you can tell a great deal about the man, such as where he comes from , what he does for his living, and his position in the society. A safa is about30 feet long and about 4 feet wide. It was traditionally considered an essential part of a man's clothing, and to appear in public without one was a sign of grossly bad behavior. The color, pattern, and style of tying a turban vary according to community, region and even district. Thus it is said that the dialect of men's turbans changes every 12 miles in Rajasthan. Some colors and patterns are seasonal, such as the white and red falguniya turban that is worn in the spring. Other signify family circumstances ; for instance, the dotted chunri pattern or bright colors signify a marriage or the birth of a child.
On the other hand, colors like dark blue, maroon or khaki signify a death in the family. Wearing the wrong type of turban under the wrong circumstances can make you an object of ridicule.
Some of the turbans are also called by the cloth by which it is tied , like pachrangi turban is made of a five different coloured chunri cloth and then jari turbans are there made by the cloth of jari and silk , it is generally worn on formal occasions of marriage along with Sherwani or Jodhpuri suits with heavy beautiful embriodery patterns on them.
Trend-setting Turban :
Each region of Rajasthan takes great pride in its own distinctive way of tying a turban. The people of Jodhpur, however , claim that the Jodhpuri turban is superior to all the rest, pointing to the fact that it has been adopted by trend-setters all over Rajasthan , from Bikaner to Jaipur
